Even our absentee ballot, we just gave them an address where we were going to be and they sent it there. Since we’ve been doing this, we’ve never run into anything where the neighbor needed to physically mail something to us. There are businesses that will open and process all of your mail that way, but for most people, that’s expensive and over the top. The neighbor opens it, takes a picture of the first page or two and sends it to us. Occasionally it will be something that needs to be opened. Most of the mail is junk, but if the neighbor picks up anything they have a question about, they take a picture of the envelope and text it to us. We have a neighbor collect the mail and keep an eye on the house. We have everything set to online billing. We travel about four months per year, usually in the wilderness and we move around a lot, so forwarding is not useful to us. Your world will not collapse as a result. I've never had problems paying my bills on time that way.Īnd consider the worst case scenario.a bill falls through the cracks and you get notified of it a month or two late, so once in awhile MAYBE you will have to pay a late fee. The friend who checks your house once in awhile (good idea anyway) can let you know if any important looking mail fell through the cracks. I also have my mail forwarded to my winter address. Especially credit cards that have usurious late and interest fees. Thanks.Īll my recurrent bills are on autopay. I am considering e-bills, automatic payment, having someone collect mail and overnight to us periodically, etc.įor those of you who have done this, please share what has worked for you. We don't get that much lead time on bill due dates as it is, so we don't think forwarding the mail is necessarily a good option. We have lined up someone to keep an eye on the house, drive the cars, etc., but I'm wondering how others have handled their mail and paying bills back home while away for an extended period. We have rented a home out west for 5 months starting in the Fall. My wife and I will be retired at month's end.
